PROTECT PIACI: INDIGENOUS LEADERS AND ISOLATED PEOPLES FACE DEADLY THREATS IN THE PERUVIAN AMAZON. JOIN THE EFFORTS TO PROTECT THEM!

Indigenous Peoples in Voluntary Isolation or Initial Contact in the Kakataibo North and South Indigenous Reserve, are facing escalating threats due to tensions stemming from territory invasion, the opening of illicit roads, forest extraction within the Reserve, and illegal mining. The lack of concrete actions by the Peruvian State authorities to address these threats is concerning. Indigenous organizations residing in the area will continue to combat these illegal activities, which pose a serious threat to their lives. Today, they call upon the international community to shed light on their situation.

Context:

In the recent panel discussion “Challenges to the Survival of Isolated Indigenous Peoples (PIACI)” in Lima, Herlin Odicio, leader of the Native Federation of Cacataibos Communities (FENACOCA) and member of the Regional Organization AIDESEP Ucayali (ORAU), shared alarming details about the critical situation faced by these communities.

PIACI in the Kakataibo North and South Indigenous Reserve is under increasing threats, ranging from illegal coca cultivation to illegal mining and territorial invasion. The discrepancy between the government’s conservation discourse and the authorization of harmful activities exacerbates the situation.

Herlin Odicio expressed concern about the lack of concrete actions by Peruvian authorities and noted that in the last three years, five indigenous leaders have been murdered, with over 40 people facing threats.

Herlin Odicio actively engages with ALLIED. He participated in ALLIED’s in-person meeting Building Bridges for At-Risk Land, Indigenous, and Environmental Defenders, held in Bogotá, Colombia, this past April. ALLIED member organizations like Global Witness, Open Briefing, and FrontLine Defenders are monitoring the situation and working together to amplify the message.
